Project Arrow

Second Grade: Beyond Words: Imagery in Literature
This unit is written by the College Of William and Mary and designed specifically to meet the needs of high-ability learners. The goals for this unit of study are:

To develop analytical and interpretive skills in literature
To develop skills in identifying, analyzing, and using figurative language
To develop persuasive writing skills
To develop linguistic competency
To develop analogical reasoning skills
To develop understanding of the concept of change, especially changes related to language

Literature selections provide an opportunity for students to explore figurative language and the concept of change.

 ACTIVITY:

In order to develop an understanding of figurative language in literature, students are introduced to the HAIKU, a Japanese form of poetry.

 PROJECT:  POSTER

In order to develop an understanding of how language has changed over time, students are engaged in a family research project. Students look at how their own language has changed over time, how language has changed for their parents and grandparents, how language changes as they change where they live, and if language itself has caused change in the family unit.
