Sea Creatures Expository Writing

Clow 5th graders create original sea creatures during their study of the story Dive To The Coral Reef in October. The story explores the deepest depths of the ocean to discover what creatures live in, around, and below the coral reef.

Creating your own sea creature, teaches you a lot about adaptation. This creature has big eyes so it must be very dark in its habitat. Each part of our sea creature is defined as a characteristic.

Presentations are thorough. This sea creature that lives on the ocean floor is flat on the bottom. In the presentation, all aspects of the sea creature are explained.

Some sea creatures have large wing-like fins to give them speed. The base of this sea creature demonstrates that it sits on the ocean floor. Some of us even when fishing for our sea creature. Might this sea creature have used its long snout to suck up food? Creating our sea creatures is as much fun as naming them. This one is called Cubbi Fish.

Designing a sea creature that has adapted to its environment is a challenge. they can come in all shapes and sizes.
Some even resemble creatures we know exist.

After studying the story, students design and construct creatures that they have written about.  In their expository essay, students write about the habitat, physical features, & diet or their newly discovered sea creature.  Students focus on idea elaboration and word choice. As a part of their assessment, students make a formal presentation to their class.
