Fifth Grade

Setting the Mood

To help practice descriptive writing, and to help students better understand the role of mood in a story, Clow 5th graders brainstormed different moods that they can be in or that they can feel when reading a story.  Some moods they shared were delighted, scared, joyful, sad, furious, mysterious, curious, and more.

Scary stories are as fun to read as they are to write.

The 5th graders then chose a mood and drew a picture that showed that mood.  Finally, students used their vivid verbs and awesome adjectives to write a description of the moody scene they created.

Scroll down to see what they came up with!

It was a sunny winter day. All the animals were playing joyfully in the crystal-white snow. Foxes were rolling about playfully while squirrels feasted on that fall's good supply of nuts. The creatures of the wood were contented.

Once blustery, rainy day the moon was full and the sky was dark with rain clouds. On top of a jagged hill was a creepy house with black shutters that creaked in the wind. Lightning crashed and set a tree to flames. Along the crooked driveway were graves of unknown people with grey roses. As the moon peeked out of the clouds a swoosh of wind blew open the door of the house.

The sun is setting as the sky gets darker. At first glance everything looks normal at Clow School. The swings are still and all is silent. But if you look closer, you see two black and mysterious shadows peeking around the back of the school. The wind starts to blow a little more quickly. The swings start to squeak and the leaves of the trees start whirling and rustling. Danger is near.

It was a wonderful day. The butterflies were flying everywhere. Flowers were blooming, and bees were buzzing for home. The apples on the apple tree were almost ready to be picked and eaten. Birds were chirping and flying all over the place. The sun is shining brightly. Yes, it's a wonderful day.

The sun is shining in the bright blue sky and the roses with all the other flowers are blossoming. The beautiful green trees and the green, green, grass are gleaming in the sunlight. It's a wonderful day.

The sky is blue. Love and happiness fill the air. The sun is shining and bunnies are jumping around joyfully. Delighted flowers are glad and dancing. Red apples on the trees are nice and big, while the golden path shines.
