Reading

Read a Fifth Grade Book Review Below

Independent reading is a part of the reading program for all Clow students. 5th graders really get into some pretty good books! You can see how these students became engrossed in what they were reading. 5th graders often listen to book blasts and sometimes present them too. They hear about new books and some excellent old favorites.

Monster Madness By: Dean Lorey

“Charlie turned to Pinch, ‘Do you have the Hydra milk?’ Pinch held up the Chap Stick container. ‘Indeed I do.’ ‘Excellent. We better get it to the headmaster right away. It’s supposed to restore anyone who drinks it to when they were most powerful. I sure hope that’s true.’ ‘So do I,’ Pinch said. Then, to everyone’s astonishment, he took the cap off the Chap Stick container and, licking his lips, drank the milk of the Mother Hydra.”

In this monster-packed thrill ride, Charlie Benjamin and his friends, Theodore Dagget and Violet Sweet, are on a vital adventure to stop the last of the Named* from crossing over to Earth, to summon a mysterious being known as The Fifth. This fantasy adventure will bore you not as Charlie and the Nightmare Academy must journey into the depths of a Hydra cave, boat through the spooky B.T. Graveyard*, and fight their way through the treacherous, monster-filled San Diego Zoo...

Monster Madness is a remarkable story, but like all books, has some weaknesses. It had a lot of great word choice, but some words were complicated to comprehend. A few examples include words such as: subdued, undifferentiated, or dire. Although the Monster Madness had some “difficulties,” it sure did have some positive virtues. I’m talking “real page turner” here. I just couldn’t put it down! Page after page, it was superior! Chapter after chapter, it was awesome! This book was the cream of the crop!

If you ask me, I adored the book. So if I were rating Monster Madness on a one through ten scale, it’d be one hundred! Two thumbs up! Just phenomenal! I’d recommend it to any fifth grader who likes adventure, mystery and, definitely, MONSTERS!!! I would probably recommend this book because of its action and its fantasy. What made it a real quality read is that the book ended with a huge cliffhanger. When I finished the book, I thought, “Wow, that was a brilliant book!” And I’m sure that you will, too.
