Fourth Grade

Poetry

Clow fourth graders have become poets during the months of January and February. They have learned to use couplets, similes and metaphors, descriptive words, active verbs and feelings to develop their poetry. Included here is a sampling of some of their high quality poetry.

THE NOISE by Kate

It rattled like a snake
I felt like I was jumping on a trampoline
Outside it was a dark spill of stars with a moon
Inside it was light with everything in it’s place
It squeaked like the the Tin man in the Wizard of Oz
There it was! It was coming toward me!
I felt it.
It was my sister playing a trick on me.

The Fumble by Jeff

The crowd was cheering as fluently as water could ever flow
Hits were coming from everywhere high and low

Now my favorite player has the ball
Oh my gosh, he’s about to fall

there goes the ball, it’s a fumble the announcer cried
The defense got it, I could have died

There’s Bill Romanowski, he’s got an easy touchdown
Wait, where’d he come from, he got him down

It looks like another fumble
Is Chris Chandler trying to tumble?

Jamal Anderson dives on it, he’s got the ball
Again he’s about to fall

I don’t want to see it happen again
I leave my score card and my pen

Then I go home and that’s the end

My New Bike by Amber

My seat was a pillow
My wheels were balloons
As I rode the leaves crackled beneath me
I drove faster, faster, faster
On my brand new bike

The Beach by Amber

The sand was as hot as the sun
On a warm summer day
The children’s laughter filled the
wind with happiness
Splash, splash, splash
went the waves as they arose above the sea line
peaceful, calm, quiet

Journey by Matthew

A journey is ahead of me

One through trees so high
Like skyscrapers beside me

And through waters where
phirunas lurk like saws ready to eat you

And over mountains tall and gray
Like spikes so high

It would take a fool to say
That there is an easy way to get respect from others

Which Way is the Wrong Way by Matthew

I went the wrong way
That had no end
The path was a circle
Which was eternal
I went the wrong way
will you
when its time to chose

Butterflies by Alex

Butterflies have wings of silk
Like garments rich people wear
They fly through the sky all day
Like feathers floating in air

Summers Day by Alex

Horses are galloping prancing
Children are singing and dancing
Birds are chirping
Frogs are burping
Flowers are blooming all day
The children are happy at play

Halloween Night by Jenni
That night he crept across the groaning floor
Out the crack of the black ,polished, open door
A hairy werewolf with blazing red eyes
With the curse he hears the one who cries
And the howling at the moon on the
HALLOWEEN NIGHT!!!!

320’s Spirit by Kendra

Her diamond eyes sparkled in the dim light as I tacked her
She moved slightly to her right as I picked up the saddle
A valentine heart for her sleek, beautiful face
No mane to cover her glistening, but muscular neck
Once in the arena, she ran like the wind
Her hooves, clapping in the dirt like thunder.

ONE SPOOKY NIGHT by Victoria

I WAS WALKING TO MY HOUSE WITH FARAAZ
THE MOON WAS GLOWING LIKE A LIGHT BULB
SNOW WAS ON THE GROUND LIKE CRYSTALS
OWLS WERE HOOTING
HOOT...HOOT...HOOT
ANNOYING AS COULD BE
FEELING LIKE A STONE
MY CANDY FELT LIKE ROCKS
I FELT LIKE I WAS FULL OF WATER
MY FEET FELT LIKE I HAD DRY ICE IN THEM
WHAT A SCARY NIGHT

The Snow Day by Adam

The newscaster said we will have an inch of snow
That night it snowed and snowed and snowed
When I woke up the fog was so thick
I could not see the driveway or the street
I was scared
of loosing power
because it was below zero
That night I watched the news
He said, “The snow will melt.”
I jumped for joy.

The Mice Feast and the Bird by Kristin

One day in this wacky world this place will turn to such a whirl. Up in the sky down in the ground these things are moving up and down. Up in the clouds the bird flying round, down in the ground lives a little worm, inch by inch the inchworm moves down in the ground in the soot. Back to the sky as we can see a big bird ready to eat. The bird swoops down but only to see a tiny tin plate with plenty to eat. He flies down in a jiffy to eat all that is good. At the site of his feast he is happy with that. Now there is only one thing he wants now that is two tiny mice. He swoops and he swoops but only to see a disappointed girl as pretty as he. He goes back to his house but only to see two tiny mice fasting on thee. He looks at them with hunger in his eye but then he says with a sad smile, I can’t eat these mice no harm they have to me so good night little mice now I’m going to have some tea. The next morning there was some dreadful news. Mr.Bird had died and the mice to. No one factually new how much they cared for everyone else there,’’ well he knows that they cared. So they lived in harmony for many many years. You would never have many fears. They played and played for very long and they even sometimes played till the break of dawn. They will now live in heaven where nothing is wrong and they will always never forget to play to the break of dawn.

FEAR by Derek

If I see a bear looking at me at full force
I feel the fear boiling in my body
As a vulture circles me frantically
I feel the trouble that I must face
When I see the the unsupportive demon
glaring in to my eyes the hopelessness gets worse
The walls are closing claustrophobically closing on my dreams

Star Filled Sky by Jessi

The sky was filled with shimmering fireflies,
When my friend and I gazed up at the sky.

Birds flew gracefully across the clouds,
As the man in the moon grinned down at us two.

Crickets had danced across the lawn,
While the squirrels slept just ‘till dawn.
