Justin & Liam

Justin Roberts Justin Roberts & Liam Davis Perform at the Clow Storytelling Festival Liam Davis
Justin Roberts and Liam Davis presented two different programs for Clow students. They were a big hit with their stories, their music, and their lessons.
First - second grade students enjoyed every minute as they experienced and recognized seven of the ways people learn in Smart Parts.

Third - fifth graders experienced the four Ss of of writing a song that tells a story: subject, structure, style and sound. They even wrote and recorded two songs in You Write the Songs.

"The 7 Smart Parts"
Kindergarten, First & Second Graders

Did you know that we use different intelligences to learn and do different things? When we use our senses and our thinking skills we use seven smart parts: Picture, Number, Word, Body, Music, Self, and People. Clow students recognized each one as they sang songs and listened to Justin & Liam.

Justin & Liam help 5th graders write and sing "Chasing the Chickens"
Figuring out what you want your song to be about is step one, the subject. Chasing the Chickens
The guard said, "Take him away!"
There's a ship waiting for me in the bay!
I have an urgent message for the king,
The chubby chickens are stealing everything.
Chorus: Chasing the chickens
all the way to Iowa,
We'll make 'em run like the dickens
And north to Canada.
It takes a lot of thinking to come up with a song worthy subject. Chickens works for our fifth graders.
Coming up with a first line is tricky. It has to be interesting and memorable. The first line and the second line rhyme. This helps to develop the structure of the piece.
The first two lines rhyme and the second do too. Students design an AABB structure. Next comes the chorus and the style of the piece takes shape.
Ideas are suggested as students sing each line and provide sugesstions for the musical style. The chorus ties the song together. Everyone joins in to try it out.
"Chasing the Chickens" by Clow 5th Graders

3rd, 4th and 5th graders enjoyed listening to Justin & Liam warming up.

The 4 Ss of Songwriting: Subject, Style, Structure, and Sound
Click HERE and you can sing along with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who wrote and performed "Blame It on the Flying Monkeys".

Blame It on the Flying MonkeysWorking on the first line is always a challenge.
Why is the window open? And "Where is my toast?"
Am I gonna have to search for it from coast to coast?
Why is my car driving down the driveway?
Looks like it's heading for Horrendous Highway, highway, highway,
Chorus: I think I'm going mad, mad, mad
Blame it on the flying monkeys
Mad, mad, mad...

Things are getting pretty funky!

3rd, 4th and 5th graders came up with some very interesting subjects for their song. Flying monkeys won! Everyone closed their eyes to vote.

Once the first line is done, students brainstorm for rhyming words to end the second line with. Everyone, even teachers, enjoyed this program.
