The LMC Program Fosters Guided Reading
Balanced Literacy Defined
The Illinois State Board of Education in the Principal's
Flip Chart for Reading [2001] presents an overview of Balanced Literacy:
Balanced literacy instruction respects and
addresses the needs of all learners, views teachers as informed
decision-makers, is flexible, and is research-based. A balanced literacy
approach to instruction provides students with daily opportunities to engage
in various reading and writing activities to help them communicate more
effectively. In a balanced literacy framework, students participate in read
alouds, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading and systematic
word study. In addition, they engage in modeled writing, shared writing,
interactive writing, guided writing, writers' workshop, and independent
writing.
What is Balanced Literacy in District #204?
The Indian Prairie School District #204 Literacy Leadership
Council is in the process of developing a literacy framework for the purpose
of defining the District's approach to a balanced literacy program. In draft
form, they have decided that the following components are necessary: a
literacy rich environment, reading aloud, shared reading, independent
reading, guided reading, literature study, comprehension strategy
instruction, and systematic word study. District #204 believes that as
educators, we strive to meet the reading needs of all of our students
through a comprehensive balanced literacy approach.
