Matt Mason attended Clow School a few years ago and is in the U.S. Army now as a member of the Arctic Wolves. He is stationed in Iraq and we are sending him lots of our best wishes and goodies too.  We are very proud of him and the work he is doing. It was great to see him when he surprised Mrs. Biewenga and her class. The students had written him letters and since he hadn't had a chance to write back, he decided to take some of his time on leave to surprise them with a visit. We sure were excited!

Matt showed the first graders where he is stationed. Students asked him lots of good questions. Students were surprised to hear that Matt didn't have any TV to watch. He told them that he did a lot of reading and listened to music on his MP3 player.

Mrs. Biewenga's class and their friend, Matt Mason. Matt took some time to explain the new desert uniform to the first graders.

These are Matt's special boots.

Matt's boots are specially made of Gortex. They are for hot, desert wear and wick the sweat from his feet to the outside of the boot where the moisture evaporates.
Do you notice anything interesting about the United States flag that Matt wears on his uniform? It is flying backwards as if it is blowing in the wind as soldiers run into battle. The insignia on his sleeve represents the 172 SBCT (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) based out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Here are the patches that he wears on his uniform.

An LMC volunteer packs up goodies to send to Matt Mason and his buddies.

Before Matt arrived, students brought in lots of goodies for us to send to him. He didn't know it but we were packing things up when he surprised us with his visit.  We know that he is going to share these yummy treats with his buddies when he gets back to Iraq.

January 2006

Matt emailed Mrs. Biewenga's class and the students at Clow with these great pictures. He ended his email like this,

"...Be sure to write back and let me know what's new at Clow and in Naperville. I miss you guys and stay cool!
