The Basket Counts By: Matt Christopher
5th grader Mitchell says:
"Here!" shouted Mel Jensen from the corner from the
court. Mel is one of three black kids in his family. He is on the
Titans basketball team and Caskie and Stoney, who are his teammates,
are really prejudice because Mel is black.
The genre of this book is mainly fictional sports
because Mel plays basketball on the Titans basketball team. The main
character of this book is Mel Jensen. He, Pedro and Darryl are all
black but Pedro is Mexican and all of them don't get treated well
from Caskie and Stoney. In one game vs. the Polaras Mel threw a pass
to Caskie but it got picked off by a Polara and Caskie called him a
dope and Mel got really mad inside of him but didn't take it out on
Caskie. Later in the book when Mel and Darryl go to the frozen lake
to ice skate they see Caskie and Stoney are there and Caskie and
Stoney go to skate in the middle Stoney falls in an ice hole and
Caskie tries as hard as he can to get him out when Mel comes and
helps get Stoney out. Do Mel and Stoney become friends or not.
One strength in this book is it is a real page turner.
For example when you thought Stoney was going to drown you would
just not stop reading. Another strength is that it has easy
vocabulary that everybody knows such as intercepted, guard, or
promised instead of something like vow. Those were actually the
hardest words too. There are also weaknesses too. One weakness is
that this book really starts off slow. For instance when the author
just talks about Mel for 2 chapters. Another weakness is it only
starts to get interesting in the third chapter when all the games
happen, like the one vs. the Polaras.
I would definitely recommend this book to everybody who
enjoys sports. I would give this book four and a half out of five
because it really teaches you not to judge people until you actually
really meet them.

Catcher with a Glass Arm by Matt Christopher
4th grader Kyle says, "This book is about a kid who has
a lot of trouble getting guys out because they steal bases. If he throws too
hard, the opponent would move to another base for the overthrow to second.
His teammates lose hope of being one of the best teams. It is very
suspenseful too and you want to know the solution to his problem and if he
is going to win! The thing that makes this book special is how you question
yourself. Like saying how is he going to improve or is he going to mess the
play up. Read the book to find all the suspense in the story." |

Heart of a Champion by Carl Deuker
5th grader Rahul says, "This
book is about a guy who likes baseball when his friend tells all about it.
His friendship can live or not live always. His father died in the beginning
of the book. He and his friend go to the Henry Ford School. If you are a
baseball fan, you will like this book. The main character has a big
friendship with his best friend, Jimmy, who loves baseball and has some
adventures himself." |
