Chapter Books

Realistic Fiction Books

The newest recommendations are at the top.

Dear Dumb Diary by Jim Benton
5th grader Emily says:

" Beauty is only skin deep, but hate goes all the way to the bone. " that was a short quote from the book Dear Dumb Diary. The quote meant a lot of the story, because Jamie was jealous that her new cousin Angeline ( miss perfect )  was doing a lot of charity work lately, and getting a lot of attention for it. Jamie and her best friend decided to go to each and every door for the Juvenile Optometry Federation to collect money ( or attention? )

Dear Dumb Diary (never do anything ever) is a fictional story based on the diary of a young girl, who gets jealous for many reasons. This book is about Jamie Kelly, who has an aunt and uncle which makes her related to her enemy Angeline ( who is absolutely popular and gorgeous ) and that's what makes Jamie's roof BLOW!!!! Jamie started to lose her temper when the fabulous Angeline started doing charity work. ( she  was getting all the attention ) So Jamie wanted to rule over that attention with her friend. But that didn't work out to well because her friend Isabella spent all there ward charity work on new contacts. But in the end it all turned out because Jamie almost raised 300 dollars!!!!!!

This book also had a lot of strengths and a couple of weaknesses. One of the strengths  of this book was that there was a lot of unexpected parts to it so it really mad me want to keep reading it.  One of the weaknesses of the book was that at the beginning there were a few confusing parts that I didn't understand. But besides the weakness this book was a total page turner!!!!

I would totally recommend this book to girls 8-11. I would recommend  girls read it because its a funny page turner . I would also recommend this book because it wasn't very choppy, and I could understand it almost perfectly!!! Also because it taught lessons like be yourself and other life lessons."

SuperFudge by Judy Blume
5th grader Shae says:

"Peter Hatcher thinks his family can't get any worse. There is Fudge, the tiny apartment and a new addition to the family. Fudge is still the worst part but what if the new baby is like a copy of Fudge? How will Peter survive? After the baby is born, the Hatchers end up moving to a different town in an old wrecked up house. After Peter meets a new awesome friend, him or his family don't know if they want to go back to the Big Apple or stay in the country.  You will have to read the book to find out.

The genre of this book is realistic fiction because this story is very realistic because this could of happened but it hasn't.  I think the genre was good for this book and it wouldn't be good as fantasy.

The strengths and weaknesses of this book are the same. 1 of the strengths is that it is a good page turner. It is a page turner because i couldn't stop reading. Another strength is that it has a good beginning because it doesn't start getting good in the middle of the book. It starts at the beginning right away. 1 of the weaknesses is that the words were kind of easy. The strengths and weaknesses were great.

I recommend this book because it is a good page turner and it is a very awesome book. 1 reason that this book was a great read because people could really connect to Peter."

2nd grader Lexis says:

"A girl named Clementine who needs a talent for the school show. She tries different ideas for the program, but can't find a good skill for her. At the last minute, she surprises herself and her school, and comes up with an act.

I think this is a good book to learn how somebody can find their special gift, and show their school."

Charlie's Choice by Jenny Dale
5th grader Haana says:

"In the future I shall be taking Charlie elsewhere," said Linda Woodham. In this book there is a very fun loving dog who everyone enjoys. The dog, Charlie, has been going to King Street Kennels for a long time. Until a slight accident almost killed Charlie . His owner, Linda, decides to take Charlie to a new kennel. Will either of them be happy with the decision? Will King Street loose its business to Pretty Paws? Read the book.

The genre of this book is realistic fiction. I like realistic fiction because most of the time you can relate to what happens in the book like this book relates to me in many ways. In the book, Charlie is very happy at the King Street Kennels because there are many people who love him and he gets fed the proper food. Then his owner took him to Pretty Paws. There he was groomed and pampered. At Pretty Paws, they: did not feed him the right things; they took him on  2 mile walks (and that is way too long for a puppy's exercise); and many other non-caring things. When the King Street Kennels opened a new edition, they invited Charlie and his owner to come back. Then the owners of Pretty Paws tried to ruin it. Will they have success? Will Charlie come to King Street again? If Pretty Paws ruined it for King Street Kennels will they get another chance? Will Charlie ever get the proper care? You will have to read the book to find out.

This book had many strengths and very few weaknesses. One of the strengths is being able to connect. For example, even if you do not have a dog, think of how you would feel if something you loved got taken away. That is how the owners of King Street Kennels felt when a cute little puppy was taken away from them, it was sad. Another strength is that it is a real page turner. In the book, the owners of King Street, the Parkers, were opening up the new edition to the kennel.  I had to see if it was going to be OK, so I stayed up past my bedtime. There were a few weaknesses including vocabulary. Some of the vocabulary is more appropriate for 4th and 5th graders. In some parts of the book they used dog show terms, like "best in show." Another weakness is in some parts it is very slow. In one part of the book, when they introduced the newborn puppies, it took almost three entire pages. Over all, there are many strengths and weaknesses in this wonderful book.

I would recommend this to boys and girls in 4th and 5th grade because it is an amazing book that anyone can enjoy. This is an excellent  "read" about what a little dog encounters by just going to different kennels. This is also a magnificent "read" because it is filled with enormous amounts of drama. All in all, this book deserves "2 thumbs up!"

Stink and the Great Guinea Pig Express by Megan McDonald / Rating: 5
2nd grader Max says:

"This book is about a boy named Stink.  One day all the guinea pigs escaped from their cages at the pet store.  Then Stink and his friends chased the guinea pigs around the pet store all day to help the pet store owner get the guinea pigs back in their cages.  After that Stink started the Guinea Pig Express.  The Guinea Pig Express was a car with guinea pigs loaded inside it in cages.  With the Guinea Pig Express, Stink and his friends found ways to find homes for the guinea pigs.  They found homes for all the guinea pigs and even Stink got the guinea pig he had wanted.

This book is special because the author put some funny things in the story.  It is also special because Stink got the guinea pig he wanted.  I also liked it because Stink and his friends worked together to do good things."

Junie B. First Grader Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! ( P.S. So Does May ) by Barbara Park / Rating: 5
2nd grader Molly says:

"The most important part of this book was when May got her present
from Junie B. at the Secret Santa Party, because Junie wanted the
Squeez-A-Burp really badly, but  when she gave it to May she felt better.

When Junie mispells ( and crosses out ) words in her journal
it makes me laugh. And Junie says " ha" too much ( even when
she isn' t laughing ) .

This book is special because it has a lot of amazing humor in it."

Judy Moody Around The World In 8 1/2 Days by Megan McDonald
Rating: 5

2nd grader Isabella says:

"A girl named Judy Moody goes to school, and one day she meets a new kid named Amy Namey also in third grade.  Amy is a reporter, and Judy is jealous because her name rhymes also, and she wanted to be the only person with a name that rhymes.  But she becomes happy because Amy has a membership card in the 'my name is a poem club' and says that she will get Judy in the club too.

They become friends, and Judy starts to blow off her other friends like Rocky, Jessica and Frank.  In Geography Mr. Todd said that they are going to "go around the world" by studying about different countries flags, food, language and games.

Judy ends up messing up the Tarentella dance she was supposed to have learned, and I felt bad for her.  Frank and Rocky make the world's biggest pizza map, and they decide to have a new club named the Eatsa Pizza Club.
I liked this book because it's funny and I wanted to keep reading it until I was done!"

Nim's Island By: Wendy Orr
5th grader Michaela says:

"Twenty coconuts into Keyhole Cove to see how long they'll float." Nim typed. There's a girl named Nim. She lives on a island that most people don't know about. She is an animal person and a kid who loves to have an adventuring time.

The genre of the book is realistic fiction because there could be a girl named Nim on a island that we don't even know about. There is Nim's dad named Jack that you will probably will not hear his name a lot because he is always fishing in the ocean. Nim is e-mailing back and forth talking about many different things, to Alex and someone is going to drop by for a while. Some twist and turns come to the book too.

There are lots of strengths and weaknesses in the book. One of them is the end is so interesting. It has more act like Alex almost drowning in the ocean a sinking boat. It is a cliff hanger and that is a strength. It leaves you on a time is so interesting and stops to read the next book that should come out. One of the weakness in the book is boring in the middle of the book because it is only about e-mailing Alex and doing chores. The second one of the weaknesses is that is to easy because the words are to easy and only one word was hard but it is just to easy.

I would recommend this book to who ever loves action and adventure this is a book for you. one because there is a stock at every turn. Second it embraces your inner-self.

Diary of a Wimpy kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney
5th grader Mitch says:

"Sissy," that is what Greg's brother, Rodrick, called him when he found out that Greg had a diary. I would give this book two thumbs up because it is very funny and leaves you in stitches. Greg is an 11 year old  boy that has a diary and is trying not to let the secret slip. I think the best part of the book is when Greg pretends Chirag doesn't exist. Chirag gets all upset and tries to get Greg to notice him. The parents get involved, and make the boys apologize.

The genre of this book is realistic fiction because it never did happen, but it could. Greg is a boy that gets bullied by him brother, Rodrick, a lot. Also, Greg has his own problems, like swim team. In addition to that if anyone finds out about his diary it would be the end of the world for him. In the book Greg goes through many problems like his brother having a party and his best friend trying to be just like him.

This book is a definite page turner. You don't want to stop reading it once you start because it is fun to read. The boy in this book is about one year older than me, so I can relate to some of the things he does.

The biggest weakness is that it has some names that are hard to pronounce like Chirag and leland. This is more than made up for by the fct that the book is extremely interesting.

I would recommend this book to ages 8-10. I would recommend it to those age groups because it is a moderately easy book. I think someone this age can relate to Greg in this book. This book is great because it is hilarious, entertaining, and addicting. The book made me think about middle school and how people might treat me.

Alice In The Know by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
5th grader Natalie says:
This awesome book is about..... A girl Named Alice who's mother died of a bad virus. She lives with her dad and brother Lester. The main idea is ...she is 17 has her drivers license and almost gets in a wreck! Also she is very entertaining! She is a girl who has to learn things from her brother and father! All In  All I would give this book a 1000000000000000000!

What makes  this book special. It sooooooooooo good! Really. I don't want to give anything away. So that's all I'm going to say! Read this great superb awesome book!!!!

White Star by Marty Crisp
5th grader Matts says:

The world shrank to the size of Lifeboat Number 4, the Titanic was gone.  This book gets a thumbs up!  It is an adventure waiting to be read!  Star is an Irish setter, red with some white on his chest.  Sam, a 12-year old boy, befriends Star.  They are inseparable on the six-day fateful voyage. Together, they experience the tragedy of the Titanic.

This book falls into the genre of realistic fiction.  Sam Harris? love for dogs keeps him from boarding a lifeboat as the Titanic sinks into the Atlantic Ocean.  He, like many of the other pet owners, refuses to step foot onto a lifeboat without his dog friend, Star.  Sam, clenching Star's leash, is pulled by the dog through crowds of hysterical people and is thrust over the side of the ship as Star leaps overboard into the freezing water.  Sam and Star are pulled into a nearby lifeboat.  Will they survive their ordeal?

I found that this book will make you enjoy the genre of realistic fiction which is one of the book's strengths.  I knew that the Titanic sunk many years ago, but I never realized that pets, especially dogs, were involved.  In the back of the book, you will find a section called Fascinating People which includes an explanation of which characters were fictional and which were real.  That includes pets, too.  Although Sam and Star are fictional characters, the plot is so believable that it seems like Sam and Star could be real.  The believable plot is another strength of this book.  Sam and Star are rescued as they bob in the water which is how some real characters? lives are saved.  Sam was traveling from England to America with his guardian, Lady Cabot.  When Sam reached America, he would be reunited with his mother and new stepfather.  This was a common practice in upper society.  That made the fact that Sam was traveling without his real family very believable.  The only weakness I could find is the sadness of all the people dying when the Titanic sunk.  It was so sad to read how all the people were screaming for help and nothing could be done to save them.  There were not enough lifeboats.  It was hard to read the parts where women were crying for their husbands and sons left on the ship and hearing more screaming when the Titanic sunk below the water.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure with real-life history mixed in.  It definitely is a page-turner.  With every chapter, Sam faces new challenges which are fun and exciting as well as dangerous and scary.  You will want to keep reading this book!  You will learn many interesting facts about the sinking of the Titanic.  Many people and pets lost their lives, and there are sad moments in the book.  However, the sinking of the Titanic is part of our history.  This book will help you understand how children, adults, and crew members dealt with the tragedy that occurred at 2:20 A.M. on Monday, April 15, 1912.

The Report Card By: Andrew Clements
5th grader Paige says:

One of my favorite parts of this book was when the principal told the two main characters, Nora and Stephen, that they were in big trouble: ''And to emphasize the seriousness of this matter, Mrs. Tersom and I have decided that Nora Rowley and Stephen Curtis are suspended from school for two weeks."

The genre of this book is realistic fiction. Nora Rowley faced the problem of being super smart. Nora wants to be a normal kid. So she acts like one. Nora's best friends with a boy named Steven. There both in 5th grade and now every one is judging themselves by their grades. Stephen thinks that he's dumb even though that Nora knows he's not. So Nora tries to get all D's so that Stephen won't think he's dumb any more. Once she got her report card she tries to avoid telling her parents. But once they read it the report card becomes the big problem. They think that she needs to be in special needs! Nora gets so upset with her parent that she blows her secret about being a genius. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens next.

This book, The Report Card, is so good that you can't take your eyes off of it. It has a little bit of difficult vocabulary. It's a little bit difficult because it has some Latin words in it.

I recommend this book to 4th and 5th graders because of it's vocabulary. I liked it because it's about two good friends that are partners on telling the school that your grades don't mean your a winner or a loser.

Talent Show Scaredy-Pants by Abby Klein
5th grader Peyton says:

"Ok, listen, everybody. Next Monday is Grandparents' day here at school," said Mrs.Wushy (my teacher). This is a thumbs up book especially for kids who are scared to get up in front of the class and talk.

Freddy finds out he has to perform in front of Grandparents. So he goes to his dad to ask for advice and his dad is like "Why don't you do magic tricks?" So Freddy says yes and he has to use his sister's magic kit. She says no but her dad makes her say yes. So then Freddy calls his grandpa to ask for some ideas for what magic tricks to use. So when he goes up in front of all the Grandparents, including his, he realizes that it is not so scary after all. Freddy ends up doing really well on his magic tricks.

One of the strengths is that a lot of kids can relate to this book because there are a lot of kids who get nervous when they have to get up in front of the class. For example Freddy was scared to go up in front of all the Grandparents until he actually did it and then he realized
that it was not so scary after all. One of the weaknesses was that the book was not very challenging to read for a fifth grader.

I would recommend this book because it is kid friendly. The book is easy to read and holds your attention. Many readers will be able to relate to this book.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
5th grader Shae says:
When 10 year old India Opal Buloni moves to Naomi, Florida with her father, She doesn't know what to expect-least of all, that she'll adopt Winn-Dixie, a dog she names after the supermarket where they met.

The genre of this book is realistic fiction because it has real people and this could have been a true story but it isn't because it hasn't happened. When India Opal moves to Naomi Florida she isn't very exited about it, yet. When she meets Winn-Dixie in a supermarket when her father asks her to go buy some things she thinks that it is just a normal trip to the market. Winn- Dixie crashes into the store and ruins everything, even the managers happiness. When Opal takes the stray, scruffy dog home she doesn't know if her dad will make her send Winn-Dixie to the pound. But when her dad meets the huge scruff ball he can't say no. Especially when Winn-Dixie smiles and shows all of his teeth. Winn-Dixie helps Opal meet new friends like Miss Franny Block, Gertrude and Otis, Sweetie Pie Thomas, Dunlap and Stevie Dewberry, Gloria Dump, and more. At the end of the story they have a big party and something bad happens so I will not spoil the surprise. You can find out the surprise if you read this amazing book.

One of the strengths of this book is that it has a strong beginning, middle, and end of it. When I started reading I never got bored at one itty bitty part. Another strength is that the vocabulary is not to hard. I noticed that because I didn't usually stop to figure out what a word meant or how to  pronounce it. A weakness of this book is that there is only action in the middle and the end so if you like action, you might not want to read it. I noticed that when I started getting close to the middle nothing was really going on.

I recommend this book for any age over about 7 years. This book would be good for both boys and girls. I say this because it is not very girly and it is not very boyish. This book is a great read because I could never put it down, that is why I finished so fast. I hope you enjoy reading Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.

A Crooked Kind of Perfect by Linda Urban
5th grader Haana says:

All Zoe Elias thinks about is a piano. She thinks things like "piano this piano that." All her parents have heard her say, "I want a piano." Zoe has been thinking about piano for a long time.   She has dreams that she will play at Carnegie Hall some day. When her dad goes to buy a musical instrument, are Zoe's dreams smashed or saved?

My favorite genre is realistic fiction, which is actually the genre of this book. There is something you should know about Zoe's dad. He will take any deal possible. So when he thinks he "buys" a piano, he actually "buys" an organ.  Zoe dislikes it, but says, "I  will get used to it." She starts to take lessons from Mabeline Person.  Meanwhile, at school there are some difficulties at school. Zoe is giving away cookies when the Girl Scout Troop is selling mints. To add to that, her "old" best friend broke up with her. Later, Mabeline Person wants to enter Zoe in an organ contest. She agrees to it. The contest happens to be the day after her birthday. Mom is busy at work and can not come home for her birthday or the organ contest. When they finally get there she sees a lot of competition and gets nervous . When she plays her piece on Saturday, she does not do so well. On Sunday, she makes very few mistakes because her mom shows up. Zoe and her mom still go to the awards ceremony even though Zoe strongly believes that she will not get any awards. The winners are ...........................?

This book had a lot of strengths but a few weaknesses. One of the many strengths was being a page turner. It was filed with complete drama. Another of the book's many strengths was it included a lot of cliff hangers a had to keep going. I even read a little past my bedtime. One of the weaknesses were being slow.  Sometimes it could take a full two pages to talk about one thing. The last weakness would be the vocabulary. Some words like  prodigy and others can be tricky. Overall, I thought it was a great book.

I would recommend this book to 4th to 5th graders because it is an outstanding book, but it can be a little challenging for 3rd grade. It is a great book because it is filled with non-stop drama. It also has those sweet moments that you can not forget. I recommend this to any person who plays musical instruments, because you can connect.

Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko
5th grader Heli says,
Moose Flanagan has to move to Alcatraz because his dad got a job there as a guard. His sister has down syndrome and at Alcatraz there is a school where she can get better. Moose loves playing baseball and his his sister. He can get both at Alcatraz.

This book is a realistic fiction book by Gennifer Choldenko. In the book a boy named Moose Flanagan has to move to Alcatraz because his dad got a job there as a guard. At Moose's school a girl named Piper tricks Moose into breaking the rules. The warden finds out about this. Will he send Moose and his family away from Alcatraz. Which will disappoint his parents and never give his sister Natalie a chance to get better or will he give him another chance? Read this amazing book to find out!

This book has many strengths and weaknesses. One strength is that it is very exciting. For example when Moose is about to meet Al's mother. Another strength is that it is easy to connect to . For instance when Moose plays baseball or when he has to babysit his sister. A weakness is that in the beginning there are no problems , but then in the middle and end it gets a whole lot better. Another weakness is that there isn't much word choice. For example the words kind, small, run, and big.

I would recommend this book because it is interesting and when I started to read it I couldn't put it down. Another reason I would recommend it is that it didn't have to many words I didn't know. This made it easier for me to understand the book and not struggle with it. All in all Al Capone does my Shirts is the is the book to read.

Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade by Barthe DeClements

5th grader Amy says, "This book is about how a girl named Elise comes to school and she is well, HUGE! Everyone makes fun of her and thinks she is the crook stealing the class's lunch money. She is on a strict diet, her mother won't buy her new clothes and she might get sent to a boarding school! But when Jenny's grades start to slip, Elise comes to the rescue! So, I guess there's more to a person than you would think. Nothing's fair in fifth grade, isn't that the truth, let me tell you! It taught me an important lesson that no matter how someone looks, there always is a good side. And,  I think that some fifth graders, or anyone for that matter, learn from this book that you can't judge a book by its cover and many otther lessons."

Then he lives with his aunt and uncle who hate each other and have 2 of everything. Jeffrey left them when they were at a choir concert. He always ran. He ran fast and met Amanda and borrowed a book from her. Jeffrey was good at a lot of things. When he returned the book to Amanda, he lived with her family. Then he ran away from there to live at the zoo. He lived with a man named Grayson next. Everyone knew Jeffrey as Maniac Magee and that he really didn't have a home. I think this is a very good book because it tells how a boy can live and survive without parents or a home."

The Classroom at the End of the Hall by Douglas Evans

5th grader Paige says, "In the beginning of this story, the classroom and characters are introduced. Then they talked about a chalkdust genie, a person with a messy desk, how they got a new art teacher, a witch coming to their Halloween party, a boy with had his own reading group, and some other funny events! At the end of the story, two kids met the first teacher ever who had lived on Apple Island. In my opinion, this was a pretty good book. The only thing was that the chapters didn't flow. The Classroom at the End of the Hall was definitely a fiction book!"

Superfudge by Judy Blume

5th grader Katelyn says, "Peter has trouble with his brother, Fudge and their new baby, Tootsie. He also has to move to Princeton for a year. This was a really good book. I liked it when Fudge hid Tootsie and covered her with stamps. I really enjoyed this funny, hysterical book!"

The Miraculous Makeover of Lizard Flanagan by Carol Gorman

5th grader Kelly says, "I thought this book was really good. It kept hold of my attention the whole time I read it. It was about a girl who is a tomboy and is going to middle school. She thought her friend, MaryAnn, was a tomboy too, until the first day of school when MaryAnn wore a skirt!"
