Fantasy Books

The newest recommendations are at the top. Ratings: 5=The Best Book

Deeper by Rogerick Gordon and Brian Williams
5th grader Austin says:

"Sarah pressed the blade deeper into the flesh of her jugular and he stopped dead on the spot, his hand still raised, his fingers spread out, his whole body shaking violently."

In the story, there is a colony which does not exist because it is 200 feet under the ground and there is a huge civilization there, which means this book is fantasy. As Will, Chester, and Cal went down on the miner's train into the "deeps", they face many challenges, like getting out of a radioactive town and trying not to be attacked by ten-foot long bats. They try to find Will's "dad", Dr. Burrows. Then, they have to get out of the "deeps" and face a whole new challenge.

The book is a very good and a page turner, like when they find a note about the radioactive town and think that Dr. Burrows is there. It is interesting because it has a lot of suspense, but it is too long for me. It ends with a cliff hanger, which made the book better for me. It also has a lot of difficult vocabulary, so I didn't like that.

I would not recommend this book to people younger than me because it has words that are hard to understand. I would recommend this book to people who like fantasy because it has a lot of unreal things. I liked this book because it was fantasy, and I like unreal events. I also liked it because it is suspenseful."

Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
5th grader Anastasia says:

"Ava lives the kingdom of Ayortha where the only two things that matter are singing and beauty. Ava has the best voice in all of Ayortha, but there is one problem, she is as ugly as a troll.

Fairest is full of mythical creatures and adventure. Ava's singing is the best in all of the kingdom. She has an extraordinary talent, she can throw her voice so it seems like it is coming from somewhere else. There is one thing that she wants more than anything else, to be pretty. But when the King falls ill, the kingdom holds a "sing" for him so he would get better. The queen must sing for him too but she can't sing. When she hears Ava throw her voice, she wants her to do that for her so it would sound like she is singing. Now Ava must do it or else her family will be punished severely. Will Ava become pretty and let everyone know what Queen Ivi is doing? Ava travels through Ayortha and goes on a dangerous quest so she can be free from the evil clutches of Queen Ivi.

Fairest is a great book and a page turner. The suspense keeps building up until the very end. If you don't like long books, then you might not like this. It's 326 pages long! It has an interesting vocabulary with good synonyms like examining and lull.

I would recommend this book to people ages ten and up because there are some difficult words. Fairest is an exciting book to read and you'll never want to put it down! I would recommend this novel to anybody who likes fantasy, adventure, or evil queens. I would give this book a 10 out of 10!"

Bone: Eyes of the Storm by Jeff Smith
5th grader Dylan says:

"No more secrets, tell me everything." This is what one of the main characters Thorn said when Gramma Ben was telling Thorn why she's having all these strange dreams. Gramma Ben is a hard working grandma and she has to try to keep secrets from her granddaughter Thorn.

The genre of the book is fantasy because it has mystical creatures like dragons. The book is about Thorn having strange dreams and Gramma Ben is hiding why she has all those strange dreams. While Phoney and Smiley Bone are paying off their debt. And Fone Bone is trying to think of things for his love poem to Thorn.

There are some strengths to the book and here are some of them. It is a really good page turner and a really funny read. There are also some weaknesses and here they are. It has some hard vocabulary and it gets confusing at some parts

I would recommend this book because it's very good and funny. I would recommend this book to 5th grade or up. One of the reasons it's a good read is because it takes a while to read so it's really fun to take time and read through. The other reason is it's really weird and funny for some people like me."

Bone: Out from Boneville by Jeff Smith
5th grader Dylan says:

"There are 8 main characters Fone Bone, Smiley Bone, Phoney Bone, Thorn, Gramma Ben, Lucius, The red dragon, and the rat creatures. The Bone creatures are small, white, little creatures.

The genre of the book is fantasy because there are mystical creatures like dragons. The book is about the three Bones that get run out of Boneville because of Phoney. They get lost in a dessert and get attacked by locusts. Fone Bone falls off a cliff and finds a map, so he follows the map and ends up in a valley. He finds a bug named Ted and Ted tells him about Thorn and Gramma Ben. Then he goes to look for them and finds Thorn. They go to Gramma Ben's cottage and spend a couple nights there and then they get surrounded by rat creatures and they have to go to the city of Barelhaven. That's were they find Smiley and Phoney.

Some of the strengths are it's a very good page turner and it is very funny but there are also the weaknesses and some of them are it has some tough vocabulary and it will sometimes get hard to understand.

I would recommend this book because it's a really good page turner and there are some weaknesses but it's still really good I would give this book a two thumbs up."

Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan
5th grader Heli says:

    "Percy Jackson is a 14 year old and the son of Poseidon, the sea god. He and his friends Grover, Annabeth, and Thalia have gone on many quests where they fight monsters.

    When Precy Jackson receives an urgent call from his friend Grover, he immediately prepares for a battle. He knows he'll need help from two demigods, Annabeth and Thalia and his bronze sword, Riptide. The demigods race to the rescue to find that Grover made an important discovery: 2 new half-bloods whose parents are unknown. But that's not all the excitement that they'll have. The Titan lord, Kronos, has set up his most vicious trap, and the young heroes have just fallen prey. Will they survive or not?

    The Titan's Curse is full of action, battles, and suspense. For example when Percy fights the gray skinned skeletons. Another strength is that it's so interesting that you just can't stop reading it. For instance when Percy has to hold up the sky. One of the weaknesses of this book is some parts that aren't so important keep going on for awhile. For example when Percy and Thalia talk about their fears. Also the book has some words that are hard to read or understand, for instance the words eucalyptus or Hesperides.

    I would recommend this book because it's action packed and full of adventure."

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer
5th grader Mariah says:

"In the dead silence, all the details suddenly fell into place for me with a burst of intuition. something Edward didn't want me to know. something that Jacob wouldn't have kept from me... it was never going to end..was it?"
Stephenie Meyer knows what her fans want: thrills, chills, and a lot of romance. and she delivers on all counts. Bella Swan lives in Forks, Washington with her dad, Charlie. She is in love with Edward Cullen who recently came back for good. Edward later on proposed to Bella. Will Bella say yes or no? My favorite part of this book was when Edward and Victoria were fighting because of what Edward did to James, Victoria's love. Is something going to happen in the end to Edward, Bella, or Victoria?

The genre of the book has to be fantasy. Bella wanted to be turned into a vampire like Edward, but Edward and his family didn't want her to be just like them just yet, so, Bella and Edward made a compromise.

This book to me is definitely a page turner because the author describes everything so descriptively. Eclipse is so interesting because because of the major cliff hanger at the end and the middle of the book. I could connect to Bella because she is an average girl that falls in love with the perfect guy. some of the vocabulary might be inappropriate and difficult to younger readers.

I would recommend this book because this book is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I would recommend this book to ages 11 and up. This book was an awesome read because the author pulled you in when a new chapter comes around."

Magic Tree House Dragon of the Red Dawn by Mary Pope Osborne / Rating: 5
2nd grader Hannah says:

"Jack and Annie are children searching happiness in Japan. They came from a Magic Tree House. They met a man named Basho that helps them with their search.

This book is special because when you read this book it makes you happy."

The Bully From The Black Lagoon by Mike Thaler / Rating: 5
2nd grader Gavin says:

"Hubie tells us about Butch.  Hubie is scared of Butch.  At the end, they become friends.

This book is really funny."

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo / Rating:  5
2nd grader Joseph says:

"A little mouse named Despereaux that is very brave. He is not afraid of humans or rats. Despereaux goes to the dungeon and has to stay there for punishment. He escapes and when the princess is in the dungeon he goes to the dungeon and saves the princess.

It teaches you that you can be brave even if you are little."

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling / Rating:  5

2nd grader Jack says, "This story is about a young boy named Harry Potter who never knew he was a wizard.  He lived with a mean family that made him sleep in a cupboard.  Harry went to school at Hogwarts which was the best school of witch craft and wizardry.  While at Hogwarts, Harry and his best friend Ron discovered the Chamber of Secrets.  They wanted to find out who the heir of Slytherin was.  Harry had to face the wicked Lord Voldemort again.

The best part of the book is that you can never make a prediction about what is going to happen next.  The book is full of adventure, fun and suspense.   It's always fun that Harry's worst enemy always gets in trouble!"

= Top =
Tinker Bell by Kimberly Morris

5th grader Michaela says,

      "They're  taking some supplies down  to the workshop!" There is this girl named Tinker Bell, Bell for short. She thinks she can go to the main land and bring stuff over but she doesn't know that her talent doesn't go to the main land. Her talent is being tinker fairy and that's where her name came from. I would give it a thumbs up if you like fairies or you like using your imagination.
       The genre of the book is fantasy because it is all made up. There is a girl named Tinker Bell and she wants to go to the main land. She got tricked by a mean and evil fairy named Vidia. She makes a bunch of inventions and it turns out to go all wrong. Will she fix it and go to the main land, or will everything goes wrong?
      One of the weaknesses is, in the beginning it is a little boring. It is because it is just telling you things you rather learn during the whole story. Another weakness is in the middle it makes you fall asleep. It does that because there are not very many interesting parts in the middle. A strengths are it is a cliff hanger because it ends right after she finished her mission. Another strength is that there is not very hard vocabulary because they repeat the same things.
          I wouldn't recommend this book to others. There is a lot of boring parts in this book."

The Jungle Book By:  Rudyard Kipling
5th grader Austin says:

     "Give the man cub to me now!" yelled Shere Khan. I think this was a very good book because it was always a cliff hanger no matter were you ended. The man cub named Mowgli was a very interesting character and he was also the main character. He has black hair and blue eyes. the battle between Mowgli was very dramatic and pretty gross. But will Mowgli win? You have to read the book to find out.

This book's genre is fantasy because a human can not talk to animals in their own language. Once there was a pack of wolves and they were laying around in their den when they heard a little sound. It wasn't very loud so they just ignored it. And then in the middle of the entrance of the den there was a little man cub. The wolves discuss whether to take him into the family or not to. Will he be accepted or turned away read the book to find out.

This book was a very good book that I did not want to stop reading. There were some hard words but they were the names of the characters. One example is Bagheera.

I would recommend this book to all children and adults. One reason would be that you can actually feel like you are in the jungle with them.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire By: J.K. Rowling
5th grader Anastasia says:

Harry Potter is a young and not so ordinary wizard. He's gone through some terrifying adventures in the past, but this one could be the scariest so far. This wonderful book is a terrific thriller and I would give J.K. Rowling a high five for being such a great writer.

This amazing novel is full of magic. Harry Potter is only fourteen, so he can't put his name in the Goblet of Fire and enter the Triwizard Tournament. The Triwizard Tournament is a contest where one person from each school (Durmstrang, Beuxbatons, and Hogwarts) must complete three very dangerous tasks. The person who performed the bravest and with the most skill will receive the Triwizard Cup and have eternal glory. When the Goblet of Fire chooses Harry's name as one of the contestants, only the teachers think that someone older than him must have put his name in the Goblet of Fire because Harry didn't put his name in and he didn't ask anyone to do it for him. This means someone in the school wants him dead.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire keeps you hooked with all the excitement of the Triwizard Tournament. It has 734 pages! That could be a problem if you don't like long books. The book sticks to one plot, which is the Triwizard Tournament, and doesn't keep skipping around.

I would recommend this book because it is exciting and has an amazing ending. None of the events in the novel are boring. I love this book because Harry goes through things more dangerous than before. Anyone ten and up who likes fantasy will absolutely love this book because it's a page turner and only some of the words might be hard. It is the fourth book in a seven book series and the best so far.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
5th grader Mariah says:

"About 3 things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him- and I didn't know how dominant that part may be-that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love him with."

'Propelled by suspense and romance in equal parts, [this story] will keep readers madly flipping the pages of Meyer's tantalizing debut.'-Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Bella Swan is a girl from Phoenix, Arizona who moves all the way to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. She has brown eyes and brown hair. She falls in love with the boy main character, Edward Cullen, who's a vampire. They have some what called 'Forbidden Love' because Edward is a vampire and Bella is human. But in the end, they end up happily ever after.

The great part of the book was when Edward took Bella to the Meadow and showed himself that he glows in the sun. Bella was stunned but wasn't frightened.

The genre for the book would have to be fantasy.

Bella Swan, loves Edward Cullen, has to face a fact that he is indeed a vampire. He resists himself from killing her, on her first day of school, in Forks, Washington. Later on the book, Edward leaves and comes back telling Bella that he can no longer avoid her. They eventually fall in love and can't be separated. They come across a major conflict in the book, that Bella, almost dies. But in the end, Bella and Edward are reunited and happy.

'The novel danger factor skyrockets as the excitement of secret love and the hushed affection morphs into a terrifying race to stay alive. twilight will have readers dying to sink their teeth into it.'

When I read it, it was definitely a page turner. Twilight is the greatest book that I've actually read and loved. it is very interesting because of the gripping romance. I could connect with the book because of Bella. she is like any normal teenage girl that falls in love. But she ends up falling in love with a vampire. it ends with a MAJOR cliff hanger of Edward pretending to bite Bella's neck to change her into a vampire. The vocabulary can be a little difficult for younger readers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'I touched his face. 'look,' I said. 'I love you more than everything else in the world combined. Isn't that enough?'
'Yes, it is enough,' he answered, smiling.' 'Enough for forever.''
'and he leaned down to press his cold lips once more to my throat.'
I would totally recommend this book because it is one of the greatest books that I have read....EVER. :)
A reason that made this book a great read was how the author described things very descriptively.
2nd grader Ciara says, "There is suspense right away as Cara and her grandmother run from a man. To escape, Cara leaps from a church's bell tower clutching her grandmother's magic amulet and she falls into the land of Luster. There she meets a unicorn named Lightfoot, Dimblethum (who looks like a bearman), and the Squijum who is the size of a squirrel. She needs to protect the amulet her grandmother gave her from a hunter and she needs to find the Queen of Luster. While traveling with her new friends, Cara encounters a fiery dragon, evil delvers and a hunter in their travels.
 This book has lots of adventure, suspense and magic. There is a bad guy but it isn't overly scary. I cannot wait to read THE SONG OF THE WANDERER which is next in the Unicorn Chronicles series."
Then he finds out that his parents were not killed in a car crash but killed by a guy named Voldemort. He also is told that he is a wizard and he must go to a school named Hogwarts. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
5th grader Sarah says, "One day, when fifteen-year old Eragon was out hunting a wounded doe, he found the smoothest and shiniest stone he had ever seen. It was  sapphire blue and seemed to gleam while in his hand. Thinking that it would pay for some meat for his family, he left with it. A few days later, he took it to a trader. Even the trader had never seen such a treasure. He told Eragon that it was hollow and could be worth a lot of money. This lifted Eragon's hopes.
One night, Eragon woke up from some eerie noises. He realized it came from the stone. Dagger in his hand, he approached the whining stone cautiously. CRACK! To Eragon's surprise, it hatched into a baby dragon, no bigger than Eragon's forearm. After much thinking, Eragon decided to keep the dragon and raise it in secret. Every day, he would give it some thin strips of meat. And every day the dragon would grow.
Soon Eragon learned of enemies that would come and hurt his dragon. They would also come and hurt Eragon and his small family. Then one day, a tragedy happened and Eragon's family member is deathly hurt. Eragon now must journey to try to overcome the legendary Dragon Riders whose evil has no boundries. Can Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, do it?
This book will keep you excited!"
She begins to work at a horse market and there she meets a lady named Onua, who is one of the Queen's head riders in the kingdom of Tortall. She travels with Onua to the kindom, and on the way there she helps our Onua by controlling the horses. Daine meets a man named Mumair who teachers her about Wild Magic, a type of gift that has no known boundaries, and is almost known not to exist. After a series of tests, they discover that Daine has the legendary Wild Magic. To others, this is a great power, to her, it's something she's been able to do since she was born. Knowing this power, she tries out its risks and in the process gets into loads of trouble, as well as almost dying. This is the first novel of the Immortals Quartet and is a quest for Daine to see if she can begin to control her literally wild magic. Will she survive? Read the book to find out what happens to Daine.
As soon as I read the first few pages, I fell in love with the character. Tamora Pierce describes the evens so clearly that you feel right in there with Daine, fighting battles and talking to animals. The book holds a special magic that just pulls you in. I think that girls for sure should try this book. It's a great story. After I read it, I began to actually believe in Wild Magic because the story was so... well... entrancing. I think even some boys might like it too."
