The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
5th grader Noah says:

"This book is full of twist and turns if you read it i hope you won't do I did I couldn't wait I had to see what happened so I looked on the last page. That's why I give this book thumbs up. It combined a great plot with ancient Greek gods to make the book even more interesting. This could fit into a lot of different genres so that's why many people like this book. This book has the most suspense you'll ever find like " You should go west and face the god who turned you shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned, you shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend and you shall fail to save what matters most at the end."

This book could be a lot of different genres but the most is adventure. A twelve tear old boy named Percy Jackson is about to get kicked out of boarding school for the fifth time. But that's not half of his problem. Now the monsters and gods seem to be walking right out of his textbook and right into his life. And before you know it he's made one mad the god of the sky Zeus' lightning bolt was stolen and now Percy has to go to the underworld to retrieve it from Hades. But does Hades have it. Or has a familiar face betrayed him.

This book is definitely a book you just can't put down. You try do but the book is like super-glued to your hands. The best thing I love about this book is you never know when something is going to strike you get attached to a character and you never want anything bad to happen. One weakness I think was the ending happened a little to fast. But besides that this books strengths were a used a lot of detail the author would not leave out one thing therefore you were not left with questions.

This book you would fall into the age group of probably 3rd grade and up with words like adolescent and hard for younger kids to pronounce. This book is a great read I mean I was exhausted after reading it for hours. Every page you want scream because you know something exciting will happen."

Tunnels by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams
5th grader Matts says:

Will's and Chester's faces drained of blood as this hope receded, and they realized the futility of their plight.  They were being dragged deeper into the bowels of the earth, and there was absolutely nothing they could do about it.?  Ready to get goose bumps, the chills, or to let your eyes grow wide in amazement?  Tunnels was so exciting and creepy that my goose bumps had goose bumps!  This book gets a THUMBS UP!  You will ?dig? every thrilling detail!

If you enjoy fantasy mixed with adventure and mystery, you must read Tunnels!  Fourteen-year-old Will Burrows loves to dig tunnels with his dad.  Together, they explore the earth beneath London, hoping to uncover archaeological secrets from the past.  They discover a train station from a century ago.  Will is beyond excited and continues to dig new tunnels without his dad.  He and Chester, his best friend, secretly dig farther into the tunnel.  One day, the unimaginable happens.  The boys break through a tunnel wall and find a city that appears to be deserted.  But is it?  Suddenly, the biggest and strongest man they have ever seen captures Will and Chester.  How could there be people living this far underground?  The boys are thrown into a pitch-black holding cell and forced to answer questions through unspeakable methods of torture.  To remain alive, Will must live with a new family in the Colony.  Chester remains in the holding cell.  Can Will escape the agony?  How will he rescue Chester?  Read the book to find out all the details!

A strength of this book is the authors? abilities to create mental images that fill the pages of this thriller.  You will believe that it is possible to live miles below the earth's surface.  The authors? use of descriptive text makes you see and feel the underground world.  For invading the Colony, Will and Chester are tortured with a ball of energy that causes such horrible pain that the boys think their heads will explode.  The ball of energy almost sucks the life out of the boys, leaving them shaky and weak with vomit streaking down the front of their shirts.  Their heads pound and part of their vision is missing.  Gruesome picture, isn't it?  Be warned, there are plenty of dark moments to follow, all described in vivid detail.  Yet, you will want to keep reading this page-turner, and you will be totally absorbed by the suspense!  The authors make you understand the history of the Colony, which explains the creepy nature of the Colonists.  Colonists believe that Topsoilers, like Will and Chester, are evil and will destroy the Colony.  History also reveals that there are rebels among the Colonists who help the unfortunate, captured Topsoilers and who dare to question authority.  Weaknesses of the book include physical violence, which is commonplace among the Colonists, and you may not like to read the gory details.  In addition, the vocabulary is difficult with words like "recalcitrant," "eviscerated," and "apoplectically," so have your dictionary handy.  You may also lose interest because of the length, 472 pages.  Finally, the book starts out slow, but it picks up steam, so hang in there!

This book is a definite THUMBS UP!  You will get caught up in this story!  At times, you will be shocked and horrified.  At other times, you will run with the rebels and root for them to win.  The ending will totally exhaust you but in a good way!  Watch for the sequel due out this spring!  I recommend Tunnels to an older group because of the violence, vocabulary, and length.  Fifth grade boys and girls all the way up to adult men and women will find this book fascinating.  Do not pass this one up!

Storm Breaker by Anthony Horowitz
5th grader Mitchell says:

On a sunny morning your driving along, when a speeding semi truck comes dashing toward you, from around the corner. A loud screech of metal, and then silence. Well this is the situation Ian Rider was in.

This book is realistic fiction because the characters could be real ,and the places are real. In this novel a boy named Alex experiences a death in his family; his uncle, Ian Rider. Ian Rider worked for a company called M.I.6. Since Ian Rider's death M.I.6. has been looking for a replacement. That's when Alex comes in. Alex is Ian Rider's grandson, but Ian hates it when Alex calls his uncle. Before Alex started working for M.I.6., he went to the junk yard where Ian Rider's car was going to be disposed of. When he got there, he got the biggest surprise of his life.

I liked this book because there was lots of action throughout the whole book, which  made me think about what I just read. It was hard to put this book down since I always wanted to find out what was happening next. At the end of one chapter Alex was left in a fish tank with one of the most deadly jelly fish, and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to him. It has an unpredictable ending. You had to read the whole book to understand it. I thought the ending would have been with Sayle killing Alex, but instead the helicopter pilot killed Sayle.

I recommend this book to anyone 8 and up because it has some violence, action, and swears. Also some tough vocabulary. If I could rate this book 1-100 I would rate it 10,000 because it's a book that's naturally good. Once again I would rate this book, even the entire series 10,000, and I bet you will too.

Flyte By: Angie Sage
5th grader Tyler says:

Have you to ever dreamed of being able to fly? Well this is what Septimus Heap does in book two of the Septimus Heap series. Septimus heap is 14 years old, normal height, normal weight, has straw colored fairly curly hair, and in this book usually wears a green tunic.

Flyte is a fantasy book and is mainly about a boy named Septimus Heap who has to save his sister when his older brother takes her away on his horse. Septimus has to save ?the princess? from his older brother.

This series is my favorite series that I have read so far. I believe this book is good for how it can be hilarious one second and serious the next. This book is so full of action and the author gave this book so many adventures. I believe this book needs improvement in poor character description. I quote ?he was a short man with shiny white shoes.?- (Weasel Van Klomf). One improvement I would make is to add more characters and places; I believe this would make it more exciting.

I recommend this book for ages eight an up for it's hard words like manuscriptoium, enforcement, and conjuration. This story will absolutely thrill your mind and make you actually want to be there.

Nim's Island By: Wendy Orr
5th grader Michaela says:

"Twenty coconuts into Keyhole Cove to see how long they'll float." Nim typed. There is a girl named Nim. She lives on a island that most people don't know about. She is an animal person and a kid who loves to have an adventuring time.

The genre of the book is realistic fiction because there could be a girl named Nim on a island that we don't even know about. There is Nim's dad named Jack that you will probably will not hear his name a lot because he is always fishing in the ocean. Nim is e-mailing back and forth talking about many different things, to Alex and someone is going to drop by for a while. Some twist and turns come to the book too.

There are lots of strengths and weaknesses in the book. One of them is the end is so interesting. It has more act like Alex almost drowning in the ocean a sinking boat. It is a cliff hanger and that is a strength. It leaves you on a time is so interesting and stops to read the next book that should come out. One of the weakness in the book is boring in the middle of the book because it is only about e-mailing Alex and doing chores. The second one of the weaknesses is that is to easy because the words are to easy and only one word was hard but it is just to easy.

I would recommend this book to who ever loves action and adventure this is a book for you. one because there is a stock at every turn. Second it embraces your innerself.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini / Rating: 5

4th grader Maggie says, "This book is about Eragon (the new dragon rider) finding a dragon egg, and once he touched the dragon, he was automatically the new dragon rider. Now he has to face evil and must decide on which side to go on, the Empire (bad) or the Varden (good). When he decides which side, the other side hunts him down with urgals and the ra'zacs. Now he must get to the other side without getting killed, or getting kidnapped by the dangers ahead of them. Eragon will have to make decisions, face dangers, deaths, creatures like elves, dwarfs, and the destruction of the powerful Morzan an empire who got rid of the rest of the other dragon riders. A lot of danger is ahead of them. If you want more answers read the book, Eragon, I highly recommend the book. You should see the movie too!

This book is special 'cause...
1. It is was so special that there was a movie made of the book
2. It has adventure, scary at points too, surprise, but most of all, magic!
3. It has fantasy , with dragons, magic, elves, dwarfs, urgals (giant, vicious, frightening, magical creatures), dragon riders, and more!"

The trek across Alaska is real hard and she becomes lost. To survive, she has to make friends with a pack of wolves. She hopes they will accept her as one of them. You will need to read the book to learn if she survives. You really feel what Julie's life is like. The writing style changes as she stays away from people and becomes more primitive...a lot like the way wolves live."
