20th
Century Timeline Project
For our unit
on the 20th Century, students complete a timeline project that reviews major events and
technological advances from 1880-2000. The following is a list of guidelines and
requirements for students to follow:
1. The timeline will consist of six sheets of paper. Each sheet will cover a twenty year
period: 1880-1900, 1900-1920, 1920-1940, 1940-1960, 1960-1980, and 1980-2000. The sheets
will be attached by being taped on the back side.
2. For each twenty-year period, you will need to include 5 or 6 events and technological
advances. It must be a combination of both. For example, 3 major events and 2
technological advances, or vice-versa. Technological advances must be on the top half and
major events must be on the bottom half. Below is an example of the basic structure of the
timeline:

3. The timeline must include a label and
colored, detailed illustration for each technological advance or major event.
4. The timeline must be completed in blue or black ink (no gelly roll pens). The best
choice for illustrations would most likely be colored pencils.
5. The last 20 years (1980-2000) may be completed on a computer if you choose, since that
is the time period in which computers began to be widely used in homes and schools. All
others pages must be done by hand.
