Fifth Grade
Reading Strategies:
Non-Fiction
Scan & Run
Another
activity that can be used to help students better understand non-fiction reading is SCAN
and RUN. In this activity, students use the SCAN and RUN worksheet (see below) to help
prepare for their textbook reading. Prior to reading the lesson, students scan the reading
and study the headings, pictures, captions, and graphs, boldface words, and
end-of-the-unit questions. Since students are taking the time to look over the lesson
prior to reading, they are focusing their attention on the reading itself and what might
be important as they are reading. The worksheet below can be copied or printed to be
filled out by the student prior to reading their lessons. It is strongly encouraged that
students use this technique and worksheet when they are reading lessons in their social
studies and health textbooks.
