Map Makers
In Accelerated Math, 5th Graders put
their measurement and creativity skills to the test. Students are given the guidelines
below to create their own mathematical island.
Draw a
compass showing north, south, east and west.
Include a
scale indicating that 1cm = 1 km.
Make the
country 15 km wide from east to west and 17 km long from north to south.
Include a
winding river that is 25 km long and begins at a circular lake that is 1 km wide.
Include
mountains on the northern border.
Include
seven cities. No two cities should be closer than 2.5 km apart. Place the
capital city 7 km from the next largest city.
Name the
country, the cities, and all the geographical features.
