Fifth Grade
Cartoon Enlargements
To help students better
understand proportions and ratios, 5th graders are asked to take out their colored pencils
and other art supplies to draw cartoons.
Students start with a cartoon square that they like from the newspaper or a comic
book. The next step is to measure the length and width of their
cartoon. Students measure out every centimeter and draw a square grid on
their cartoons. The cartoon measurements are then turned into a ratio.
After measuring their cartoon, students decide how many times greater they would like to
enlarge their picture. They must set a proportion of cartoon to enlargement to
determine if their increased cartoon will fit on their paper. After determining the
best size increase, students draw a square grid on their drawing paper, keeping in mind
the new ratio of increased size. For example, if a student were enlarging his
cartoon by 4, then instead of 1 centimeter squares, he would measure 4 centimeter squares
for his drawing paper.
Finally, after the new, enlarged grid is draw, students work one square at a time to
duplicate their small cartoon to a larger piece of work!
