Fourth GradeSocial StudiesFlat StanleyEach September Clow fourth grade students read the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The project is completed in conjunction with fourth grade teaching and learning about the United States and other countries. In the story the main character is so flat that he can be mailed across the country in an envelope! Clow fourth graders create their own flat character and mail him/her to someone they know in another part of the country. The receiving individual is asked to forward him/her to someone they know in another part of the country. The process continues throughout the year until the flat character is mailed back to the student in May. A database is maintained to record the year-long journeys. It is fun and instructive for students to record their flat character's journey in the database. When studying where flat characters have been, they learn about land forms, jobs, local economies, and climate. Here are some flat character examples that have traveled around the world! Look out, Flat Stanley may be in your mailbox soon!!!
