State Fair Rubric

The State Fair for Clow School is held in the Spring. The fourth graders prepare intensely for it at school. They collect information from a variety of sources, read about their state, create a state visitor’s brochure, memorize facts about their state, create a state newspaper, and tune up their musical skills.

Students complete the major project at home. They have a number of project choices. Students need to select one of the projects. This project needs to teach others about their state incorporating any 2 of the following topics:

Economic Systems- Ways of Making a Living

Political Systems- Ways of Choosing Leaders and Making Laws

History- Time line of major events, people

Social Sciences- Major themes, morals, heroes, values from literature and song

Geography- Major physical features, climate, products, and exports

Decision Tree- Major alternatives and consequences facing the people

Students are provided time to discuss and brainstorm ideas in class, but the project should be completed at home. The quality of the project should reflect the time that has been given to complete it.

At the end of April, students will begin to memorize 5 important facts about their state. These facts should include information about the bulleted items above, and a miscellaneous fact about the state bird, flower, etc. if desired.

We are looking forward to a busy time in April and May. It will be fun to become experts on our states and share our knowledge at the State Fair. Thank you for all your support from home.
