Hiking the Appalachian Trail - Assignment
Student Samples

As a group, you will be “hiking” in the Appalachian Mountains during summer vacation. You will need to organize and plan your survival pack. It should be filled with everything you will need to reach your destination in good health. At the end of your trip, you will be creating a hiking poster. This poster will give others tips about how to have a successful hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail.

Things to consider and include on your poster:

What might be some dangers on the trail?

What equipment and supplies should you pack?

What food and clothing should you bring along?

How will you prepare your food for eating?

Would it be beneficial to bring a dog along?

What might be some problems in bringing a dog along?

Will wildlife or plants be of concern?

The goal is to design a poster that would be helpful for someone who is preparing to go on a backpacking hike through the Appalachian mountains. You need to use the knowledge you gained by working with your hiking team, the information you found in the virtual museum, and from reading about the Appalachians in your social studies book.
