HEART HEALTHY FOURTH GRADERS ARE ON THE WAY
Fourth grade science
begins the year with a very healthy unit for the mind and body! Our studies begin with
learning about the circulatory system. From that point we continue on to a unit about the
respiratory system.
The first half (circulatory system) of our body study runs the course of approximately 15
class meetings. Please keep in mind that a text book is not the primary source of our
learning experience in science; many activities, including discussions, and note taking
occur. Consistent journal review and opportunities to share at home what we have learned
in science is the key to healthy success.
In each science classroom there is a learning center that includes required activities.
Progress on completion is charted and it is the responsibility of each student to monitor
his/her own progress. For a passing grade these activities must be completed by the end of
the respiratory unit. Exact dates will be assigned as that unit begins.

What are the essential questions and abilities each student must be able to demonstrate to
show essential understanding for the circulatory unit:
 | What is health? |
 | What are the parts of the circulatory system? |
 | How do the parts function together to circulate blood? |
 | What affects your heart rate? |
 | Identify heart parts on a diagram. |
 | Describe how your blood circulates throughout your body. |
 | Record pulse rate during different activities. |
 | Describe and explain the structure and functions of the
circulatory and respiratory systems and how they interrelate. |
 | How does nutrition affect the heart and lungs? |
 | How does stress affect the health of the heart and lungs? |
 | How does tobacco use affect the heart and lungs? |
 | Explain the basic principles of health promotion, illness
prevention, and safety. |
 | Explain the effects of health related actions in the body
systems. |
 | Demonstrate skills essential to enhancing health and
avoiding dangerous situations. |
