Second Grade

Reptile Research & Reports

Mvc-673f.jpg (33888 bytes)

In October Clow second grade students are involved in a one of a kind research project! First, they each choose a reptile. Geckos, Komodo dragons, and crocodiles were just a few of the many reptiles that the children decide to research.

Then, the kids are brought into the LMC by class in order to learn about the many sources they could use to find their information. The children immediately begin using the encyclopedia, reference books and computer programs to locate information to complete their research outline. The teachers review expository writing and how to use their research outline to create the report. We use our hamburger writing model for each paragraph. This model calls for 1 topic sentence, 3 details and a conclusion.

As a culminating activity, the children read their reports to the class. It took a lot of hard work to finish this project, but they loved it! Below are four quality student products.

Reptile Research Rubric (5 points maximum for each area):
  1. Information in my report is presented clearly?
  2. I have a topic sentence, conclusion sentence & details (at least 3)?
  3. I used correct spelling and mechanics in my report?
Speaking Rubric (5 points maximum for each area):
  1. Looks at listeners
  2. Holds papers below chin
  3. Stands up straight & tall
  4. Speaks loud enough for all to hear
  5. Uses appropriate speed in speaking
