Reading Reminders - Stuck on a word? Try these strategies.

Strategy	Example
Skip it and go on.	The ______is barking. He sees the mailman.
Say the beginning sound and read to the end of the sentence.	The d_____is barking.
Does it make sense?	The dog is barking.
Look for key words or picture clues.	Key word: barking, primary texts have picture clues for each page.
Backtrack and read it again.	The dot is barking...The dogue is barking...The dog is barking!
Look and listen for letter patterns. dog, log, hog, frog,	The dog is b-ark-ing, or bark-ing or b-ar-king or bar-king for barking. The suffix -ing is taught from first grade on.
Look for little words in big words.	bark, ark or mail-man, man,an
